Nur Misuari Declares Independence

Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) leader Nur Misuari has declared independence in Mindanao a few days ago, this could mean more fighting in that troubled region. The old warhorse felt neglected and abandoned by the Aquino Administration after the rival group Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) signed with the Government a new peace pact.

The MNLF leadership was further agitated when the region of Mindanao was again subdivided to provide new territories to the MILF. The Aquino Administration even signed an economic framework which will assure funding for the new Bangsa Moro Entity. The financial agreement between the Philippine Government and MILF assured huge amounts of money that can be collected from mining, investments, etc. You name it, the MILF will have a piece of it.

If you give any individual or any party with vast territories and enormous amounts of money, other groups will certainly be envious and will raise mayhem. Nur Misuari had his chance to reform Mindanao during Pres. Fidel V. Ramos’ administration, Misuari was given the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to develop and manage. Massive amounts of money (billions of pesos!) was also at his disposal at that time to promote peace and prosperity in that war torn region.

But Nur Misuari failed miserably in fulfilling his promises to his own people. Mindanao is still poor, undeveloped and war-ravaged. The question is this, where did all the funds given to Nur Misuari end up? Well, we all know where it all went; into his own deep pocket!

Now that the Aquino Administration is grooming a new group to promote peace and prosperity in Mindanao it is understandable that Nur Misuari and his MNLF group will again start shaking things down to destabilize the new peace process. Yup, same old story. Mindanao will again become a no man’s land because of the imminent escalation of hostilities.

Let’s all face it folks, peace will never be attained in Mindanao. Not in this lifetime….
