21 Filipino UN Peacekeepers Released.

A couple of days ago, 21 Filipino United Nations Peacekeepers assigned to keep the ceasefire at the Golan Heights in Syria were captured and held hostage by Syrian rebels. The rebels accused the Pinoy Peacekeepers as being sympathizers of the Syrian Government forces. The rebels blocked the path of the United Nations Filipino contingent, ordered them to alight from their UN vehicles and took them to an undisclosed location. The rebels then demanded the immediate pullout of the Syrian Government troops in the area.

The United Nations  and the rest of the International Community immediately condemned the incident and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the Peacekeepers. The UN said that the Filipino Peacekeeping Force were on the area to assure that the fighting will stop and that the violence will not spill over to the Israeli border. Yup, mess with the Jews and all hell will break loose!!!

The Pinoy Peacekeepers were not armed and were only rationing water to the nearby communities when they were abducted. They were doing their best to help alleviate the worsening situation in the region because of the many months of heavy fighting. Their UN vehicles were clearly marked and painted white to prevent wrong identification from both warring factions.

Hopefully, before the week is over, the 21 Filipino Peacekeepers will arrive in the Philippines to be with their families. These troops are simply performing humanitarian assistance and are not taking any sides in the conflict. All United Nations Personnel should never be used as bargaining chips by any group. These UN Peacekeepers are there to prevent more bloodshed so they should never be the target of violence.
