Semirara Coal Mine Landslide Kills 5.

A huge landslide at the Semirara Coal Mine in Antique has killed 5 workers. Five more miners are still buried and missing under tons of earth. The coal mine is operated by the Semirara Mining Company and is one of the biggest coal mines in Asia. The coalfield is located in the province of Antique on the Panay Island which is found in the northernmost of the Visayan Islands.

Rescue efforts are hampered by unstable ground, as proven by continuous landslides in the area. The coal mine is an open pit mining, also called strip mining; considered by experts to be the safest form of extracting minerals but accidents can still happen. Like all forms of mining, strip mining incurs extensive damage to the environment.

In strip or open pit mining, large areas are stripped of vegetation, mountains are blown up, scraped and flattened; then the precious metals and minerals are scooped up by humongous machinery. After the coal is mined, the region is turned into an enormous wasteland. Coal is primarily used to fuel Power Plants and other huge installations. Coal is cheap and very useful but it is also very destructive to the environment.

Ask the Chinese, they know how coal can make their life miserable. Major industrial cities in China are now constantly enveloped by smog and pollution caused by coal fired plants which threatens the health of the population. Industries that use coal as fuel emit exhaust fumes that pollute the air. Air which we breathe into our lungs....

The Semirara Mining Company said that it will shoulder all the medical and burial expenses of the victims. The company assured the families of the workers that the benefits will be paid quickly. Well, money doesn't solve everything in this world.

The entire globe should start using fuels that are non-pollutant to the environment. We should also develop and use renewable and infinite sources of energy. Let's all stop destroying our planet. It's the only home that we have....
