PHIVOLCS: More Landslides!!!

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or (PHIVOLCS) recently warned of more landslides in the areas affected by the 6.9 quake in the Negros Oriental Region. This is due to the heavy rains brought about by the Low Pressure Area affecting the quake damaged region. Scientists said that the huge cracks, fissures and fractures caused by the quake along the mountainous areas could go tumbling down at any moment due to being saturated by rainfall.

The scientists urged the local government to evacuate those people living near the danger zones for fear of another massive landslides which could easily bury a lot of victims. The PHIVOLCS even suggested the permanent relocation of the residents to safer grounds since the threat of landslides will always be a serious hazard.

Local authorities expressed their agreement but are uncertain if they can permanently relocate the local residents to a safer place. Most of the residents are not willing to abandon their homes and their property even if their lives are in danger. The local government cannot also provide them with a decent and safe place to permanently settle down without more preparation and funding. So the residents eventually move back to their old community when the rainy season is over. I guess it shows the true meaning of the saying, Home Sweet Home.
