Php400M Seized by Customs.

More than Php400 Million worth of fake medicines, bags, watches and cell phone accessories were seized by Customs Authorities yesterday. The contraband were loaded in a couple of 40ft. containers vans awaiting release at the pier. Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon himself led the inspection of the assorted smuggled goods along with members of the media.

I guess after all that embarrassment given by the gun-toting, sports car driving customs clerk a few weeks ago the Customs Chief had to make a good impression on the public. The best way to do that is of course, catch some contraband and present that to the media. That way, Commissioner Ruffy Biazon can get himself reelected next year as Congressman or maybe as a Senator or whatever post that he may desire.

It would have been a perfect score for the Bureau of Customs except they always fail to catch the smugglers. They do seize the contraband but it gets resold after a few months if nobody shows up to claim it. You know why? Because the smuggler would rather wait for his goods to be auctioned off by the Bureau rather than pay the legal duties. That way he gets a huge discount on taxes but lots of profit when he sells the goods to the market. As for the Customs Officials? They get lots of grease money too along the way. How else could they afford to own a Porsche?
